Getting Involved
There are many ways to support our work and your contribution will make an incredible difference.
Below is a brief description of the volunteer vacancies that are currently available. However if you need any further information please contact the office (go to contact us page).
All our vacancies are within the Sheffield city boundary, although some of our volunteers live just outside, and have chosen to volunteer within Sheffield.
No.1: Friendly Visitor Volunteer (Good Neighbour Scheme)
A friendly visitor is someone who would enjoy visiting older people who may have no family or friends living in Sheffield, and gives them that precious commodity - their time. Many of our friendly visitors visit once every week, have a cup of tea and more importantly spend time chatting with the person.
There are enormous benefits for the person you visit. You become someone to chat and share life with, you give structure to their week and something to look forward to.
Often people have a real feeling of being valued because of the time you spend with them.
Location of volunteer vacancy
At present we have vacancies for friendly visitor volunteers in most areas of Sheffield.

No. 2: One-off Volunteer (Good Neighbour Scheme)
We are often asked to help people in a one-off capacity. For example, doing some occasional shopping, moving furniture to enable someone returning home from hospital to move about more easily, escorting someone to a hospital appointment and in many other ways.
As these tasks are one offs we hold a list of volunteers on our database who have specified which of the one-off tasks they are willing to help with.
Location of volunteer vacancy
As with friendly visitors, we have demand for one off volunteers in most areas of the city.

No. 3: Accident and Emergency to Home Scheme Volunteer
This scheme operates between 6am and 10pm, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year and operates to both the Northern General Hospital and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
Volunteers select times in the week when they are willing to be called (this does not mean they have to always be available within these times). When a referral comes through from the Hospital a volunteer will be called to go to the relevent department - either in their own car or a taxi, at our expense.
They pick up a person (over 60) who has had an emergency visit, but has no medical reason for remaining there, they escort them home, and make sure they are settled in before leaving them there.
Location of volunteer vacancy
At present there are vacancies in most parts of the city, but especially in close proximity to the Northern General Hospital. As with the Good Neighbour Scheme we need volunteers in most areas of Sheffield.

Mix and Match
Many of our volunteers have found 'mixing and matching' the above vacancies has increased the variety of experience and enjoyment they gain. For example a volunteer may take one friendly visiting case (and visit once every two weeks), offer to move furniture (they probably would be called once every 3 months), and be on the A&E to Home Scheme rota at weekends (probably taking a call once every month).
If you are interested in getting involved, fill in a few details on the reply form and as soon as we receive it a member of staff will be in touch.
Each volunteer undergoes a thorough recruitment procedure including a CRB check to enhanced level.
There are 3 main parts to the recruitment procedure:
- Complete an application form, this requires 2 people who would be willing to give you a written reference.
- An informal interview, which gives an opportunity to ask any questions you may have, hear about SCCCC's work and fill out all the relevant paperwork.
- Induction / training, a further meeting to work through a basic induction and training booklet.
As you begin volunteering and through your time with SCCCC, you will receive regular contact from SCCCC staff and also invitations to volunteer training and social events.
If you would like to get involved just click on the "Volunteer Today" link on the right hand side of this page.
